- Keep
their dog in a fenced yard, not allowing it to roam at will
- When
walking dog, keep it on leash (except in designated areas such as a dog
park) and under control (do not allow it to jump on people or approach
other animals without permission)
- Correct
the dog for unprovoked aggression (anklebiters are just miniature vicious
dogs – that behavior should not be considered “cute”)
- Scoop
poop – always carry waste disposal supplies
- Provide
adequate veterinary care for their dog
- Provide
shelter, fresh food and clean water for their dog
- Take
steps to prevent insect (flea and tick) or parasite infestation
- Minimize
noise caused by their dog (correct the dog for nuisance barking)
- Keep
their yard clean (neighbors do not appreciate odors)
- Spay
or neuter any dog being kept strictly as a pet
- If dog
must be kept intact (for health or show purposes), take steps to prevent
unwanted litters
- Provide
love and companionship for their dog
- Provide
play and exercise opportunities for their dog
- If
unable to keep dog, return it to the breeder or find another responsible
home for the dog (not turning it in to a shelter or burdening a rescue
operation, or setting it loose to wander)
- Know
and comply with the animal ordinances in their community
